Hulu South Africa
Hulu South Africa hasn’t launched (yet) but watching Hulu in South Africa is just as easy as watching American Netflix in South Africa.
The solution lies in making it appear that you are actually accessing the Hulu website from within the United States and then getting around their block on SA credit cards.
First let’s address the location solution.
When the service providers like Hulu look at your IP address they can instantly see that you are connecting from South Africa and so they block access to their site.
The trick is to make your IP address appear to be originating in the USA. The easiest way to do this is by means of using a service like SmartDNS.
Their service will allow you to “bounce” off their DNS servers that they have all over the world so that you can access media from providers like Hulu and others.
The SmartDNS service costs just under $5 per month but is really worth it. The content on Hulu is excellent.
They have plenty of really good movies for all ages. We love Netflix but Hulu seems to have a more recent selection of television series.
Of course, you would need to pay a subscription fee to Hulu as well but we’ll get to that later.
The total amount you will be paying each month will still be far less than what people currently pay for the full DSTV service.
To set up the SmartDNS service is pretty easy.
Smart DNS Proxy have a comprehensive, step by step procedure outlined for each possible device that you might want to watch on. If you follow their advice you will be watching Hulu in South Africa in no time.
The setup process on their “How To Setup” page shows you how to change your DNS settings on whichever device you’re using. We recommend making the changes to your router.
That way you don’t have to touch any of the settings on your other devices that connect to the internet via your router.
Simply sign up for the free trial, login to your Smart DNS account and then follow the steps on the “How To Setup” page on their website.
If you like their solution (we know you will) then after the 2 week free trial you can choose to either pay $4.95 a month or you can save some money by paying up front for a few months at a time.
Just remember that this is in addition to your Hulu subscription
If you are concerned about some of the steps you are welcome to ask us or otherwise you can check out our Netflix South Africa guide which will give you a good idea of how to make the changes.
The process is very similar and even if you aren’t very technically minded you will no doubt be able to follow it.
The tech support from Smart DNS is also brilliant. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such quick responses from a support query as I have with them.
How To Pay For Hulu In South Africa
Once you’ve got yourself setup with Smart DNS it’s time to sign up with Hulu.
The problem is that lately they’ve made it so that you can’t sign up unless you’re using a credit card that has been issued in the US.
We’ve seen similar unblocking solutions over at hulu-uk.com and it seems in some countries there aren’t payment problems but South Africa still seems to have some issues.
If you try to sign up with your SA issued card then you get a message saying: “Sorry, we cannot process your order at this time”.
There are three main ways to get around this.
- Buy a prepaid Hulu gift card
- Sign up for an American Paypal account
- Get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard
Getting a prepaid Hulu gift card is probably the easiest of the solutions. You can buy one online here. Once you’ve got the gift card use it when you set up your account with Hulu.
Some users have reported that once the account was set up with a Hulu gift card they were then able to add their SA credit card into their account settings and Hulu debited their card once the gift card credit had been used up.
Hulu keep changing their system so this may not work in the future.
Getting an American Paypal account in SA is possible but it takes a little trickery.
Once you’ve signed up with Smart DNS you’ll need to take advantage of their free VPN service.
Follow their instructions on how to set your VPN up using one of their US servers. Once you’ve got it set up, connect to the VPN and then head over to Paypal.
Use an email that isn’t already connected to a Paypal account. Enter valid US address and telephone details for your contact details.
When it comes to entering your credit card details enter your SA issued credit card details as per normal but you’ll need to change the City, State and Zip code to US info.
Converting your own postal code to a US zip code is easy. Take the postal code of the address your card was issued to and add a zero to the end of it so that it becomes a five digit number. eg. 7220 becomes 72200.
Now check if this is a valid zip code by entering it at this website. If it says that the zip code is invalid then increment the last digit by one until it confirms that the zip code is valid. In the case of our example we needed to use 72201.
Take note of the city and state that this zip code corresponds to and then use these in the city, state and zip code info that you enter for your credit card info on Paypal.
Now you should have an American Paypal account. Head over to Hulu and use this Paypal account for your billing.
Hulu have cracked down on a lot of prepaid credit cards but you can still give it a bash.
There are plenty of online suppliers but do your research before choosing one to see if it still works with Hulu.
Is Hulu better than Netflix? Well, that’s a tough one to answer. Hulu seems to have a lot more of the new TV series but Netflix has been making loads of it’s own TV series now too and they’re really good.
Whether you decide on Netflix, Hulu or both at least you don’t have to wait for Hulu South Africa to launch because with this solution you can watch right now.
